About Us

European tradition meets today's technology. Johan Schutte (pronounced Yohan) immigrated to Canada from his native Holland in 1970. He was already a professionally trained goldsmith through the hands-on apprenticeship program he studied in Europe. After working for several years in Ottawa, Ontario and then in Calgary Alberta, he opened Gold Dust Jewellery in Medicine Hat, Alberta in the spring of 1977.

The European techniques he had learned soon earned him a reputation as a master goldsmith who could make any type of jewellery from scratch. His skills combined with over 30 years of bench work experience here in Canada have made him uniquely qualified to master extremely challenging jewellery repair and design.

Old world skills began to merge with modern technology when his children became involved in the business. Together with his son Neil Schutte and son-in-law Stephen Waites, this family team has taken Gold Dust Jewellery into the 21st century with computer aided design and state-of-the-art milling machinery.

This combination of European tradition and today’s technology has made Gold Dust Jewellery a leader in the custom-made jewellery industry.
